Specialty Surgical Services

At Shirley Veterinary Hospital, we want to be able to provide your pets with complete and optimal care. That’s why our highly skilled surgeons are equipped to perform the most advanced surgical techniques with the newest technology. We employ the use of laparoscopic procedures, which is minimally invasive to the patient, and post-surgery rehabilitation therapy to reduce recovery time. All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet.

Our surgical services include laceration and wound repair, eyelid surgery, ACL repair, total hip replacement, dental extractions, foreign body or mass removal, limb amputation, bladder stone removal, gastropexy, trauma repair and reconstruction, abscess and memetona surgery, TPLO, c-sections, fracture or break repair, spinal surgery, pyometra surgery and more.

Our Surgical Process

A veterinarian examines every pet before any procedure. At this time, the surgical process is explained and we will discuss why the surgery to be performed is important, risks, consequences of not doing surgery, and the costs involved. Depending on our conversation with you, we may or may not recommend certain pre-anesthetic tests. Ultimately, it is your decision whether to do surgery and to what extent you might want to investigate hidden potential problems before doing any procedure involving anesthesia. We explain the pros and cons of any decision and help you make the right choice for your situation.

We use only the safest available anesthesia to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients. Our licensed veterinary technicians are with your pet all the way. While under anesthesia, your pet is kept warm with a heated water blanket and is constantly monitored.

Post-operative care includes appropriate pain management and lots of TLC. When your pet needs surgery, our veterinarians make sure that they’re comfortable with medication administered before, during, and after the procedure. Pain relief during any surgical procedure has a profound impact on how pets feel during recovery. It also significantly affects their attitude and activity once they return home. After your pet goes home, we will call you to check on his or her progress and to make sure everything is going well. If there are problems or questions — no matter how small — you can be sure that everyone here takes those extra steps necessary to make sure that your pet does well.

In addition to pain management, Shirley Veterinary Hospital also offers physical therapy and rehabilitation at our Healing Hands 4 Paws Rehabilitation facility for pets requiring post-surgical therapy.
