Dr. Sarah Alward
First and foremost, Dr. Sarah is an animal lover. As a pet parent to 3 wonderful dogs, she knows what it’s like to love your pet with your whole heart. Her practice is based on personal attention and the best possible care for your pet.
Ask Dr. Sarah about “the kids” and you’ll hear tales of Ruby, Hooligan, and Miss Betty. It’s that effusive love for animals that drove Dr. Sarah to complete an Agriculture degree at the University of Alberta, in 2001, for the purpose of becoming a veterinarian. But she soon traded snow tires up north for sandy beaches down south, attending St. Kitts’ Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine for 3 years before returning stateside for her clinical rotations at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2006.
With Ruby in tow, she arrived in New York City for an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the ASPCA’s historic Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, staying on an additional year as an associate (watch old episodes of Animal Planet’s ‘Animal Precinct’ and you just might see Dr. Sarah in action!). Desirous of green grass and fresh air, she took an associate veterinarian position with the East Hampton Veterinary Group in 2008 and began working with The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) during her spare time. A year passed and she found herself transitioning to a full-time position with ARF, where she was responsible for the health and welfare of over 100 animals. Through ARF, Dr. Sarah is also able to help save the lives of dogs rescued from kill shelters in South Carolina, street dogs in Puerto Rico, and puppy mill dogs across the nation, most notably in the midwest through a partnership with Best Friends Animal Society.
In 2009, Dr. Sarah teamed up with Meals on Wheels and began providing low-cost veterinary care for their disabled, elderly and homebound clients.
Dr. Sarah lives in East Hampton with her 3 rescue dogs, Ruby, Hooligan and Miss Betty, and her wonderful husband John and adorable son.
Dr. Sarah has joined us at Shirley Veterinary Hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as a Saturday each month. Clients that have already met her “love” her and she looks forward to meeting everyone.
