Dr. Dexter Archer

Dexter Archer, V.M.D. CCRP, graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. He spent the first three post-graduate years at both a general practice and a specialty animal hospital. While there, Dr. Archer worked alongside various Board Certified Specialists in different fields of veterinary medicine, including Surgery, Oncology, Internal Medicine, and became the director of the Emergency Critical Care department. He moved to Long Island in 2000 to become the Medical Director for a small animal hospital in Oakdale, NY. After a year in this position, he decided to purchase his first animal hospital, which was located in Riverhead, NY. Dr. Archer successfully practiced there for over six years, building lifelong, compassionate relationships with his clientele. He purchased his second veterinary hospital, Shirley Veterinary Hospital, in February 2007. Dr. Archer has expanded his role as General Practitioner to include special interests in Canine Rehabilitation, Wound Management, Dentistry, and Pain Management. In 2013 he obtained his Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) from the University of Tennessee. With his passion in physical rehabilitation and the benefits seen in his patients, he opened and currently operates a successful physical rehabilitation center, Healing Hands 4 Paws, located in Shirley, NY.

Dr. Archer is the proud father of 3 children and resides with his wife, Tara, in Riverhead, NY. He is an avid golfer but also enjoys fishing, and various outdoor activities. He serves on numerous boards and committees representing the community needs. He attends 3 to 4 continuing education seminars per year and is dedicated to excellence in veterinary medicine and canine physical rehabilitation.

Dr. Catherine Grey

Welcome Dr. Catherine Grey!! 🎉

Dr. Grey is a native New Yorker, born in Manhattan, growing up in the city, Queens, the West Indies, and Westchester. Dr. Grey always wanted to be a veterinarian, since she was five years old. Following in the footsteps of her grandfather (DVM from the Ohio State University, 1919), she graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1983, Magna Cum Laude. She also holds a B.S. in zoology from Michigan State University.

Dr. Grey has been in private practice for 26 years, on Long Island. She supplemented her experiences in private practice with emergency medicine at the Nassau Animal Emergency Clinic in Westbury, alternating part-time and full time there, for 17 of those years. In addition, she taught veterinary technicians at Suffolk Community College, and has done volunteer work at the Tuba City Veterinary Clinic in Tuba City, Arizona, on the Navajo reservation.

Dr. Grey loves all animals, but has a special place in her heart for cats and pitbulls because both are so misunderstood. She also loves beagles! When not practicing, Dr. Grey can be found exploring and globe trotting (39 countries and counting), doing photography, reading adventure/ mystery/ crime/ and sci-fi novels, hiking, working out, culinary experimenting, and eating!

Virginia Carpenter - Hospital Manager

Mrs. Carpenter is our Hospital Manager. Her years of nursing and supervisory positions have added an impressive level of experience to our practice. Mrs. Carpenter’s responsibilities are wide in range, including handling personnel, vendors, and inventory control. She also deals directly, and quickly, with client and patient concerns. She exhibits an incredible degree of flexibility and compassion in her handling of both employees and clientele. Mrs. Carpenter is always seeking to expand her knowledge in practice management by attending conferences and researching in veterinary literature.
